TECHNIQUE #1 - PUT YOUR SITE TO THE "VOTE"
It's possibly
the single most important technique you'll ever need to increase your
sales, and it can be done from Day 1, even if you have just 10
visitors a day! Let me explain...
What Is It?
The technique is called split testing.
Even though you may already be familiar with it, let me demonstrate why
it's so important to you, and how you can do it even with low traffic.
First, here is the definition I give in my ebook Small Changes: Big Profits (2008 Edition):
"Split
testing, also known as A/B testing, is a marketing term originally
coined by the mail order companies... before sending out a mailing,
they might take two smaller samples of their mailing list - samples A
and B. They would prepare a sales letter to send to each sample,
identical except for one element. This element could be a different
headline, a different call to action, or even a different price!
The
company would then send the relevant letter to both samples, and they
would track the sales that result from each sample. By tracking... they
get to find out which version of their letter is likely to convert
best. The remainder of the mailing list would then receive the version
of the letter that resulted in the most sales."
How Can Split Testing Make You Money?
Let
me give you an example of why split testing is so important...
Take a look at the following two headlines for an insurance product. Which of
the two do you think would result in more sales?
"What Would Become Of Your Wife If Something Happened To You?"
"Retirement Income Plan"
An
insurance company tested both headlines, and found that the second
outperformed the first by 500%.
What about these two headlines... which would you say is better?...
"Auto Insurance At Lower Rates If You Are A Careful Driver."
"How To Turn Your Careful Driving Into Money"
The first headline was 1,200% better.
Now,
just stop... and think about this for a moment. Had they simply decided
to run with the second ad because it sounded clever and some marketing
executive got a kick out of writing it, how many sales would they be
losing, each and every day?
Let me put 1,200% into some
perspective for you. A 100% improvement means 2 times as many sales. So
a 1,200% improvement means 13 times the number of sales.
In other words, if the second headline produced 100 sales, then the first headline would produce 1,300 sales!
Split
testing allows you to put elements such as your headline to the vote of
your visitors, who vote with their credit cards and subscriptions.
Whichever version
results in more sales or subscriptions, that is the best one!
How Can You Split Test On The Internet?
Don't worry, split testing is far easier than it sounds. All you need is...
(a) Some traffic to your site.
More traffic always helps, but as I'll show you, you can use this
technique with as little as 10 unique visitors a day (you'll see how in
a little while).
(b) A bit of imagination.
This is to come up with an alternative headline or some other
element of your sales letter that you can test against the original one.
(c) The right kind of software.
You'll need this software to automatically split your traffic, and to
measure actions such as sales and subscriptions, so you can calculate a
conversion rate.
Can This Technique Be Used By Affiliate Marketers?
Absolutely.
Many affiliate marketers have an intermediate page between their own site
and the affiliate program's site, such as a product review page - the headline and wording of the
review could be split tested.
Some affiliate marketers simply
have "headline" type links to the affiliate program's site - this can also be
tested. One marketer I know split tested the wording of the link and
increased click-thrus from 20% to 60%... that's a 200% increase!
